Educating for Sustainability

How do you wake people up to the importance and relevance of sustainable business practices? This paper looks at how learning journeys - to see firsthand the health of economies, societies, and natural environment around the world - can serve to raise consciousness about and motivate action toward sustainability. It describes three such journeys of corporate executives and reports observations from the author along with reflections from executives who participated in them. In so doing, it demonstrates the impact of consciousness raising experiences on executive’s self awareness, understanding of others, dealings with diversity, and engagement with the larger world. The paper concludes with some considerations in the design
of experiences aimed at educating executives for sustainability.
