Leadership Styles of Corporate Responsibility Managers

Based on a target population of 354 firms, this paper presents an analysis of the profiles and activities of 90 managers directly involved in Corporate Responsibility (CR) functions. Data provide the following results: senior-level management is more likely to assign CR management positions to managers who operate within the firm, rather than to hire experts from outside; most CR managers have business management educational background; and CR managers have critical support function for strategic decisionmaking.
This paper also presents the Corporate Responsibility Manager Map, which identifies four leadership styles of CR managers: the specialist, the generalist, the process-oriented, and the external-oriented manager. The map presents a practical tool to describe CR management positions.
