The second Half : Ageing, Entrepreneurship & Sustainability

The name of the Program, co-evolved by Volans, Cranfield University’s Doughty Centre for Corporate Responsibility and Accenture, refers to the second half of the human life-span—on the basis that in the developed countries the traditional “three score and ten” is stretching towards a 100 year life-span. The working hypothesis is that, like most governments, business is ill prepared for what has been described as an oncoming ‘Silver Tsunami’ of challenges associated with the ageing trend. This paper discusses the potential linkages between the ageing, entrepreneurship and sustainability agendas and looks at the implications of the ageing trend for three main areas: markets, entrepreneurship, and politics, government and public policy.
